The Duomo

Siena’s Gothic heart

The Siena Cathedral Complex stands as one of the absolute peaks of Western art. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with its unmistakable black-and-white striped façade — the colors of the Sienese balzana — crowns the city’s highest point, offering a spectacle of polychrome marbles, statues, and Gothic spires that seem to challenge the sky.
The interior is an overwhelming sensory experience. Lifting your eyes, you are captivated by the blue, starry ceiling, yet it is by lowering them that you discover the true miracle: the Cathedral Floor. Described by Giorgio Vasari as the “most beautiful and magnificent” ever made, it is a carpet of fifty-six marble inlays that tell biblical, philosophical, and mythological stories. It is a work so precious that it is fully uncovered only for a few months each year.
Beyond the main nave, the route winds toward the Piccolomini Library, an explosion of color thanks to Pinturicchio’s frescoes, and continues into the Opera Museum, where you can admire up close the Maestà by Duccio di Buoninsegna. Visiting the Duomo is not just sightseeing, but a mystical journey through centuries of devotion and timeless beauty.

ATTRACTION
The Gate of Heaven This is a series of rooms never opened to the public for centuries, located in the Cathedral’s attics. By booking this guided tour, you can walk above the naves and enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of both the inside of the Duomo and the city outside. A truly exclusive experience for those who don’t suffer from vertigo.
The Magic Square of Sator On the outer wall of the Duomo, near the door leading to the Opera Museum, the famous "Sator Square" is carved. It is a palindromic phrase in Latin (Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas) that can be read in every direction. For centuries it was seen as an esoteric, protective symbol: finding it among the Cathedral’s marbles is a little treasure hunt.
Buying the OPA SI PASS To save money and see the whole complex stress-free, I strongly recommend buying the combined ticket OPA SI PASS. With a single ticket you get access to the Duomo, the Piccolomini Library, the Baptistery, the Crypt, and the Opera Museum. It is valid for three days, letting you enjoy every treasure at the right pace.
